154 Starting

Okay so you’re thinking what the hell does 154 mean, or maybe just wishful thinking on my part.  So eventually I will reveal exactly what 154 is all about.  First let me dispel a few ideas you may have about what 154 means.

154 does not mean the amount of weight that I need to lose because thankfully I’m not quite that fluffy.

154 is not my desired weight goal.

So what is 154?  Okay I’ll give a hint, the number will decrease on a steady basis.  Well that probably gave it all away and that is about all that I’ll say for now.

This blog actually will tie into that number because yes I’m also trying to lose weight.

If you’ve been following me on this site and although there aren’t many, I do appreciate the few of you who happen to drop by for a laugh or for a read.  I’m still trying to lose weight and I can actually say that I feel as if I’ve given up my potato hack dieting for good.  I had several attempts to get back onto it but within a day or two of restarting I would fall by the side.

So what is the difference this time?  My will power is still as weak as ever so instead I’m going to take an old age-old stab at continuing to try and lose weight.  I stepped on the scale this afternoon after having lunch and about went into shock, I was at 218.1 pounds and based on my 5’3″ frame, that is way too much weight.  The only good thing is the fact that the clothes that I wear hide some of my obesity or at least that is what I used to think.

The other day I took a good look in the mirror, a really good look and let out a big sigh.  I couldn’t believe just how fat I looked in my underwear and it saddened me.  No, didn’t depress me because I try not to let too many things depress me.

So something pretty cool happened last night and thus I came up with 154.

I’m sure so many of us large or fluffy people have been constantly checking out the internet about our weight problem and how to lose weight.  I’ll admit that I surf the net too much and I’m always looking for the easy way to lose weight.  Yes I did rapidly put on 60 pounds because of the eating habits, lack of exercise, how unhappy I was and because I was always getting sick with allergies.  Those were my dark days and I’m going to put them behind me.

One thing that I’ve always done when I’ve been successful in losing weight, increasing my water, doing more walking, more exercising and slowly decreasing the bad things that I eat or ate too much of in the past.  So my goal is each day to do some form of exercise, it doesn’t have to be a lot but just some form of exercise each and every day until 154 comes to fruition.

The weird thing is that usually I’m all excited about the cold of winter coming on but for some reason this year I’m just thankful that it is cool in the evening because it is allowing me to sleep.  During the summer I only managed to get broken sleep and usually the max amount added up was 4 1/2 or 5 hours of sleep which I can tell you is not good.  As we all know the body needs the rest of sleep in order to help us lose weight.  If that was all we needed to do to lose weight I would become Rip Van Winkle but maybe not.  I would just like to sleep a solid eight hours and it would be nice but I still go to bed early in the morning and most of my sleep is still interrupted with my neighbor’s young dog.

Okay, time out while I stand up on my soap box and gripe about my neighbor and his dog.  He made a big point of showing off his dog and trying to walk his dog.  Only he did about everything wrong in walking his dog so much that Cesar Millan was probably cringing.  The dog was in control and my neighbor was just walking his dog as if to show off what he now had and giving a long 3 syllable name when it is best to have it at no more than 2 syllables.  He doesn’t play with his dog, he no longer walks his dogs, he ignores his dog’s late night barking which wakes me up but worse of all is they always yell “NO” at the dog because he is trying to heard the children.  The dog is a German Shepherd, a herding and guard dog but he hasn’t bother to teach his grandchildren about his dog so when the kids run away from their grandmother, the dog tries to heard them back to the grandmother by grabbing their wrists.  So of course the kids don’t understand what is going on and they all start screaming at the dog and chasing the dog away.  It is no wonder the dog is practically scared of his own shadow.  A couple of months ago the dog started barking at me as I mowed the lawn so as I was emptying the bag I went to pet the dog but he ran off.  Eventually with my softly speak the dog’s name and sweet sounding voice the dog came over to me and I let him sniff me.  He ran off but quickly returned and of course I rewarded him by petting him and giving him a good back scratching.  Now whenever I go outside the dog has a happy bark when he sees me.        LAST PART….  I hate it when people get animals as a status symbol and don’t do anything to be involved in the animal’s life.  …..STEPPING OFF MY SOAP BOX NOW THAT I’VE PUT IN MY 2 CENTS WORTH.

So now back to sleep, I’m still hoping for good sleep but the important thing I’m trying is to eat smaller quantities of food and increase my water intake.  I used to be good but have fallen off the water wagon.  So I bought a new water pitcher, one for work and one for home so I will always have clean cold filtered water and can stop buying bottles of water.

I’m also hoping to lower my blood pressure because I really don’t feel like breaking in a new doctor because the PN I used to go to was a pain and never listened to a thing I ever said.  So I know by regularly exercising I can decrease my blood pressure and I’m also taking some supplements to are said to help decrease the build up of plaque in arteries.  So we’ll see just how 154 works out for me.


Different Approach


Okay so here I am once again writing in this blog and wishing that I still wasn’t overweight, but just in case you couldn’t guess, I’m still overweight.  Basically I have no will power and at home no one really cares that I’m trying to diet and when family all get together it is a marathon of eating all of the worse things.

So here I am with about 2 weeks to go until my family reunion as they go about trying to plan for things to eat and although it is usually sort of healthy, I fall back into the area of having fajita tacos which means that I’m eating tortillas, usually flour and eating all sorts of other things which are really that good for me.

Lately I’ve rediscovered baking but seeing that I’m trying to watch my carbs, that means that regular flour is out and you can’t always substitute almond flour for places where you would usually used regular flour.  I’ve tried baking using a sifted combination of almond flour and tapioca flour and although it is good, I have to be careful about the amount of liquids that I add into the mixture.  In the recipe that I’m adapting they suggest using coconut flour which gives it a type of denseness but I don’t like the taste of coconut in milk, flour or oil.  Yeah I know sounds kind of silly for someone who has been trying to go paleo/primal because apparently most of them believe that you can’t cook/bake a single thing without these products but I hate coconut.  No, let me take that back.  My mother has an awesome recipe for coconut macaroons but since it is made with sweetened condensed milk and I’ve yet to figure out how to make that type of milk in a primal fashion, I’m not going to be eating coconut.

So now I’ve come across something that has peaked my interest once again and so I’m trying it to see how well I can stay on it.  The diet is very restrictive…..NOT!  The exercise plan is very strenuous…..NOT!  Worse of all it is extremely complicated….NOT!!

For dieting there is some restriction and actually it is a pretty good thing to do and fairly simple.  Cut Out Wheat !!  Yeah really he says it is that simple.  So I started doing some limited research on cutting out the wheat in my diet and am pretty amazed at how much wheat are in so many common products.  In my research I also learned that there are several other products which have wheat in them but that is only a part of the main product and of course the main offender is flour.  Unless you are actively trying to cut out flour, you don’t realize just how much it is used in our every day lives.

Most of us were raised that we have a sandwich for lunch when we went to school unless you bought your lunch at school but I’m pretty sure that flour was used in those lunches.  One thing that I’ve never gotten past is having a sandwich for lunch which is usually eaten on the go as I am preparing to go to work because just in case you forgot, I work a late evening shift and only get off a little before midnight.

So yeah it is easy to understand that I need to cut wheat out of my diet, this is what Mark Sisson promotes as do other paleo diets and they encourage using other substitutes but they also stress to restrict the carbohydrates that you consume.  According to this one book I just read, you don’t have to count carbs, calories or anything like that, just cut out the wheat.  I will admit that they push is also to eat more organic or at least a healthier diet but mainly cut out the wheat.  I’ll be honest, I’m not made of money and so I have to be very careful when it comes to eating organic because it is downright expensive and to be perfectly honest, organic does not mean it is chemical free, they still use chemicals when growing organic.  So I try to stay organic on some things and others, well at least I’m eating better.

Let’s see, I’ve talked about cutting out the wheat, the next thing that is promoted is Tension.  Just in case you don’t remember, I used to jowalk (jowalk=jog until I ran out of breath, then walked until I caught my breath and then repeat) (I was doing HIIT before it became popular)  5 miles a day, six days a week which meant that I was an endorphin junkie.  Also I was about 30 years younger and not so overweight.  Sure I had put on some weight but it was only about 30 pounds which quickly came off and the pounds stayed off for a long time.

Back to the word Tension.  I plan on using tension to help shape my body.  I’m not talking about the type of tension/stress you can get from work or really, really annoying people; I’m talking about using your own body’s tension to help redefine my hidden muscles.  Oh they are down there underneath the flab I just need to work them and they will come back.  So how do I work them, well according to everyone, I need to get out and move, do quick dashes, lift weights and all sorts of things physical and I will get back my physique.  Well I’ve been trying to do it and all I got were strain muscles and end up hurting myself.  As I mentioned above, I’m planning on using my own body’s Tension to help build back up some of the strength that I once had.  So how am I planning on doing this, why with something super easy, called Isometrics.

Wait…. let me take that back.  Isometrics aren’t exactly easy if done right because you’re using your own body to rebuild your strength which is what I desperately need to do.  I didn’t realize it but when I was younger, I had a lot of strength although I wasn’t very muscular and could push and pull a lot more than other people though.  Now that I’ve let my muscles go to pot, it will be a long battle to get them back into shape.  I know that isometrics actually work because one of my uncles used to be very skinny and had absolutely no muscle tone but he started working out and doing isometric exercises and soon he had developed strength.

So using Tension I plan on redefining my muscle tone.  This person did not push vast amounts of cardio but there is one bit of cardio that I really enjoy doing and that is riding Serenity.  She is my recumbent tadpole tricycle, which is pedal power.  I’ve spent money buying her and now I’ve been slowly decking her out so I can take her out on the open road and that is what I plan on doing for cardio exercises and believe me when I say that I will be doing some lifting too because the trike has a base weight of at least 30 pounds and with all of the additives I’ve put on the trike the weight has increased too.  So I will have to lift it in and out of the vehicle I’m traveling in as well as ride.

The last part of the equation is to breathe.  I will need to breathe during my exercises but the real hard part will be to learn to breathe through the stress at work.  Yes there is a lot of stress at my work as I’m sure there is with your own job and so if I can practice breathing maybe I can keep myself from reacting poorly and saying anything that will not be beneficial.  He stresses to accept the negative and not to let it rule us, which is hard to do because I’m sort of a attack the problem head on type of person and have always been that way so this will as always be a work in progress.


Anxious To Start

I know, you are wondering what the heck I’m talking about, well allow me to elaborate.  I got on the scale the other day and in 2 months of not giving a flip what I ate, I ended up putting on about 10 pounds or so.  I stepped on the scale the other morning and was shock, yes really shocked at how much I weighed.  I have not been this heavy since 2001 when I went to Spain.  You were wondering what I weighed, well when I started the trip I as a whopping 222 pounds.  Seriously weight there but only 17 days later I was down to 202, so I had a weight loss of 20 pounds in 17 days and I actually had fun when I did it and guess what, I ate whatever I could eat.  Okay yes I was 12 years younger than I am now but in case you forgot some of my earlier posts, I did a heck of a lot of walking.

Some of my earlier posts also mentioned that I did a lot of walking and that was great and I was lugging around at least 10-14 pounds of camera and gear.  It wasn’t that the camera was as heavy as ‘Big Mo’, my professional grade camera, but it was till a pain to my shoulder.  Now I don’t have 17 days to just do nothing but walk so the idea of doing this now to lose weight is out because of my having to work and already I’ve accounted for my vacation days and holidays.  Most of those days will be spent in Atlanta and others going to other cons, so what’s a person to do?

Well, one of my bosses told me about how he lost 15 pounds since the beginning of the year, don’t know if I said this already but bear with me if I have, I’m almost done.  Well he will start off his morning with a premier protein shake and then an hour later he goes for a walk around the block.  Because the blood is pumping in his stomach area he says he doesn’t really feel hungry.  So he eats a light lunch and then he has a reasonable dinner.  He is now at the point that he walks 3 miles each and every day and he eats whatever he wants at dinner and he is still losing weight.  He is obviously in the zone of losing weight.  He says that he focuses on eating protein and tries to reduce the carbs.  One of the guys working here has lost 45 pounds in a couple of months but he works out quite a bit too.

So I tried doing that but things didn’t work out as well because I did not increase my water intake.  Now that was mistake #1.  My next mistake was switching the dairy digestive product, I tried something new and let’s just say it was not my friend.  Earlier this week I went to see my stylist for my hair and she was experiencing the same problem and she suggested that we text each other every day, well we said that 3 days ago and we have yet to do the texting thing.  So my experiment into the protein shake didn’t turn out as I had planned.  Then I bought a recumbent tricycle and was planning on doing exercising, well the weather has not been my friend when it came to riding.  Okay also I’m a bit hesitant in riding in the street, because I’m down so low and in my city most car drivers believe it is okay to honk, jeer, throw trash at the rider and get as close as possible to the bicyclist.  I must admit that some of my fellow riders are the cause behind some of the hostility towards all bicyclist but it is my wish that you are not oe of those people.  So last month I only managed to make it for 2 rides, a 18 mile ride and a 33 mile ride.

As I stated the weather has no been my friend lately.  My problem is that I don’t get up early which puts me behind on what I need to do before I go to work in the afternoon.  Then by the time I get off it is way too late to go out and exercise.  I don’t need to unwind as much as I used to because I switched work stations and am paired up with someone much quieter and in general there is less stress.  My problem is that I only slightly wired after having to drive home, it is a twisting road and there are more drunks in the area cause there are more bars in the area.

So now I’m anxious to get started on my new dieting/exercise program.  I’m hoping to be able to have one of the protein shakes as one of my meals but still continue to eat along the Primal Blueprint way or as some people call it, the wimpy Paleo diet.  Wimpy because we allow dairy in our foods we consume.  Realistically I know that I will have carbs but I hope to limit the intake of carbs from bad sources such as pasta, breads, pizza, etc.  I have my juicer so since I’m not a fan of cucumbers, celery, kale, etc, I will end up juicing them and then I know I will get my vegetables.  Now I don’t know about other people’s green juice but mine reminds me of V-8 cocktail drink.  One thing I will be doing is adding more water to my body because it will make things go smoother, if you know what I mean, and it will keep me hydrated.

Now I did mention exercise and that is exactly what I plan on doing, exercising by riding my trike.  When we did the 33 mile ride I felt like someone beat me up and left me almost lacking energy at the end of the ride.  So what did that mean, oh yeah… I’m definitely out of shape.  I was gasping for breath and started to hear a wheezing as I was breathing out.  Think I need to go to the doctor and get that checked out.  Could be some of the stuff left over from when I had bronchitis late last year is still hanging around in my lungs so that is what I need to get checked out.

Anyway, back to riding.  So I’m riding a recumbent tadpole trike (2 wheels in front and 1 wheel in the back).  o we have been getting some rain but actually it is foggy and cold.  A couple of weeks ago only 2 people showed up for a bike ride in 39 degree temperatures.  This week it is threatening to rain all weekend long but there might be a small window of opportunity for me to get out and ride.  It is my hope that soon the weather will be good enough for me to ride every day so until then I will need to learn to something else for exercise.

So yes I’m anxious to start my newest weight loss plan which will include the shake, protein bars and of course lots of time on my trike.  So here’s hoping that tomorrow’s weather will allow us to ride.  Besides, I need to get better since the group want me to join them on a 100K ride at the end of March but I will not be in shape if the weather doesn’t start cooperating.

Oh and if you were wondering….I will be riding “Serenity” (name of my trike because I feel at peace and quite serene while riding) and yes I also am calling it the same name Mal gave to his Firefly class ship.  So maybe next time I’m here I will have my act better together and will be reporting on good news as far as my dieting is going.

Prepping For New Diet

Well I’ve been speaking with one of my numerous bosses at work because he has lost 15 pounds since the beginning of the year.  Okay so what is wrong with this??….He is +50 years old and he is a guy.  So you’re probably thinking why is she so against guys, well I’m not against guys it is just that they have an unfair advantage when it comes to losing weight.  They don’t carry as many fat cells around as we do and so it is easier for them to lose weight then it is for females.

But still I’m going to start doing some of his tactics concerning dieting.  He is using a protein shake for breakfast and then he goes out and walks.  He stated that even he had a hard time getting started on walking and thankfully he is now up to 3 miles which he walks almost every day.  So he has inspired me to want to try something similar.  But there is a problem with what he is doing and what I hope to copy.  He substitutes his breakfast for a protein shake and he kind that he uses is not an isolate whey product meaning that he is not lactose intolerant and yours truly is but there is hope.

One of the sites that I’ve been checking out on this protein drink sows that others also have the bloating and gas feeling in their system but they seem to handle it by taking the fast acting lactose chews, so that is something that I might try out while I look around for this particular type of protein shake.

So what is so special about this way of dieting that makes it work, well that is what I’ve been trying to figure out.  I asked him for specifics but he was rather vague, so I’m interpreting the simple plan he told me.  Like all ways to lose weight, the winning way is to focus on the diet because that is where the majority of things happen.  He didn’t count calories, but he did pay attention to the amount of protein and cut back on the carbs that he consumed.  Hmm, sort of sounds like a what I used to do, right?!! So he limits his amount of sugar, even the sugar consumed in fruit which is rather important when it comes to dieting but he said when a good diet is combined with even a small amount of regular exercise it is a winning plan.

Okay isn’t that just what I used to do??  Well pretty close with one of the changes that I will end up doing.  He is substituting the protein shake for his breakfast and then an hour later he goes out for a walk.  Now this protein shake was loaded with vitamins and was a little bit different on some of the counts compared to the Isolate Whey Protein that I had been taking but even if I took it more than one day in a row I was getting the bloated feeling in my system.  But I digress, so he then will drink lots of water after his walk and then he would have lunch and then eat what his wife fixed him for dinner.  So I thought that doesn’t sound too bad especially since he said how full he got after having the protein shake but since he didn’t want to walk on a full tummy, he would wait an hour before walking.

I would love to just jump right in and start doing the diet plan but I have to find where this protein shake is sold because the boss buys it at one of the wholesale clubs which I’m not a member of but I may be one in the future.  My point is that I would hate to get a membership only to find out that I can’t take the protein shake because it doesn’t work right with me, so I’ve got to find the lactose chews and try it with another protein shake to see if it works right.

Now I don’t mind walking but be truthful I really don’t enjoy walking that much especially when I know that I have to stop soon and then go start getting ready for work.  Yet he can do it and he works a 10 hour day where I only work an 8 hour shift…hmm, I think I’m just making an excuse for me…what do you think?

Well I just got through dropping a poop-load of money on a tadpole trike and the picture on it is on my other blog, Recumbent Trike Riding.  As stated I dropped a lot of money on it and I know that I had better start riding it to justify my spending so much money on my trike.  I can say this much, I love riding my trike and it has renewed my love of bicycling.  I first joined a group that rides every Saturday and that was nice but I found out that they didn’t post the routes they usually take so I wouldn’t know if it was going to be a short ride or a long ride nor what type of surface we would be riding over i.e., paved street good condition, paved street but pothole city, cement bike trail or rough trail, etc.  Besides that, I was getting tired of just doing one ride per week, so I started going out on Sunday and riding which was fun.  Now that I’m considering doing the diet plan, I realize that I need to do more riding, almost every day and wouldn’t you know I found a group that rides almost every day.  There are different people in charge of the rides so it is not the same person but I like that they ride every day or at least offer you a trail/route to ride and let you know more about the ride scheduled for that day.

In the past I have gone on one or two trails that they posted but always on my days off.  Now the trails that I’m talking about are 18 and 24 miles which will start conditioning me and will also teach me about climbing hills although there are no really big hills….well there are a couple but they are not long climbs.  The hills will still present a challenge but the even bigger challenge will be for me to get up early, drink my breakfast then head out and do my ride and then come home.  Now if I get good that means that I might be able to take a bat nap to refresh myself before work or maybe not.  I’m sure in time I will become faster or at least I hope so.

Heck I remember when 2 summers ago I was riding 18 miles in 1 hour 10 minutes and sometimes even in one hour.  It was the reverse 18 that really killed me and I would often taken 1 hour 30 minutes or 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete the 36 mile ride.  Why is this important, well as I started riding my trike I noticed that it took me 2:15 to ride the 24 miles.  Heck my fastest time for the 36 miles was 2:17 but maybe it was also because I was in better shape although I weighed about the same but had better wind if you know what I mean.

So I will be trying to start this diet on Friday and not Thursday for several reasons.  I have my massage appointment on Thursday morning and this is my makeup appointment since I was feeling sick and slept through my last appointment.  Besides my hands/shoulders could use some relief from CTS.  This also gives me a day in which I can try to find this special protein shake as well as try out the lactose chews and see if those work any better.  I’ve been checking around and nothing seems to be rating as high in vitamins, and other items such as proteins, carbs, etc.  Now sure it may have more carbs but it s a pre-mixed drink with milk isolate in it so that may cause a problem, thus why I need to do some experimenting.

The reality is that I don’t expect to lose weight as quickly as that one boss because like I said men are cheaters when it comes to losing weight because of their genetic makeup.  So if I can lose a good amount in just a week or two then I know that will keep me going and hopefully put me on the right path.

As I said I spoke with my boss and he tells me now that he even jogs, not an option for me thank you bad knees and poor feet, and he ends up drinking the protein shakes for breakfast, lunch and as a snack if he gets hungry but he doesn’t really get hungry until the evening.  He said that his stomach has shrunk which is good and I know that I could do that too.  Then he said if I decide to do that, he will encourage me to do light amount of arm exercises since I won’t be using my arms quite as much when triking.  Thankfully I already have light weights so it will be repetition time to build up muscle.

So that is my plan and now I have a day to gather my wits and products to prepare.  Speaking of preparing, I also had to do a little bit of work to get my trike ready.  I just bought some oil and got BMX style pedals so now all I have to do is apply those two things to my trike.  I know that the BMX pedals will not be as good as clipless but because of my continual shattering of my sesamoid bones, I can not wear clipless pedals.  So I even tried out some bicycling shoes that look like tennis shoes and they don’t slip off but I put off buying the shoes for at least today and may hold off until tomorrow or next week to buy the shoes.  I’m trying not to go crazy by buying everything that I will need for a more comfortable ride.  I already have bike envy and wish I had more money to have bought a higher end trike but my current trike will take me where I need to go an my hope is that it takes me down the path of weight loss and health.  Only time will tell.

So I was thinking that maybe I should call it something special so I was thinking ‘Get Off My A$$ & Ride Diet’ but that seems a bit long.  Maybe Recumbent diet because I hope to have it based around riding my trike. Hmmm, let me see GOMAR diet…nah doesn’t sound right.  Well let me think about it a bit more Protein Recumbent Diet (PR diet)….nah.  Oh well I’ll think about it and let you know what I decide to do.  For now I’ve got to sign off and start getting ready for the next shift to work and then fight my way through traffic because a large concert will be letting out just about the time I get off work.  Oh joy!

Oh so why do the diet, well I weighed myself the other day and was at 219.1 and then the next day at 218.2 and the point is that I had been almost t 200 pounds before Thanksgiving but obviously I’ve allowed myself to back slide.  My goal is to try and fit into regular BDU’s, not having to have wear custom ordered big size and if I get really lucky I will sew a costume that will display my weight loss…but maybe not.  This year they will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Stargate ( a movie that evolved into 3 television spin-off shows) and I want to look good ad march in the parade.  So that is my goal and I’ve got a long way to go so I had better start prepping for my

Lost My Way

Well I didn’t really try very hard during the holidays to control things and it really shows.  I now have problems even fitting into my work pants much less fastening them without having to suck my gut in.  So you could say that I succeeded in gaining weight but that wasn’t really what I wanted to do.

Then I thought that I would start in January but kept coming up with excuse after excuse and before I knew it I had hit a record high on my weight….. 219.9, I said it.  I got up to 220 lbs and I had not been that heavy since early 2000.  Now of course in the spring of 2000 I lost 17 pounds in 15 days.  The thing is that I didn’t realize that I was losing that much weight and it came off so easily.  Probably the reason I lost it so quick and easily was because I was on vacation.  Bet that is the first time you’ve heard of people losing that much weight while on vacation. I went to Spain then Portugal back to Spain, to the UK (Rock of Gibraltar) and finished up in Spain.

I know you’re thinking trick diet, no it was just being on the go all of the time.  We ate at least 3 meals a day but we walked everywhere and I was carrying around a camera bag.  So I was lifting weights (my camera bag) and walking 5-10 miles a day.  The funny thing was that I was eating all sorts of unhealthy things…well not really unhealthy but let’s just say that a breakfast sandwich of egg/bacon/on a roll for breakfast/lunch/dinner wasn’t the wisest choice but it sure was tasty.  So now that I think about it, the person I was traveling with didn’t like the local cuisine too much so we ate a lot of American fast foods.  When we did eat locally it was pork or seafood and yes there was a lot of starch items such as rice, lots of rice in the dishes that we ate.  The thing was that we did a lot of exercise and despite them having siesta, we were still pretty much on the move.

I wish I could have stayed longer and maybe I would have lost more weight but that didn’t happen but it took 2 years of bad eating for the weight to start coming back.  So the lesson I should have kept in mind was exercise, exercise, exercise.  Because I was so active I managed to burn what I ate.

I know I’ve probably recognized that before but right now it is really hitting home because of my pants being so tight as well as my sports bras.  That part really sucks.  Just a few months ago I had loose fitting clothes and now they are fitting very tightly.

So the other day during one of the few very cold days in our city, I came across an older gentleman (only saying that because of his white hair and beard) who didn’t act old.  He had just stopped in a convenience store right across from my station and I had a chance to talk with him.  I was riding a red trike and it was all decked out, I’ll explain later.  So after speaking to him a bit I learned that he started his trike journey in Seattle, WA, turns out he has traveled well over 2100 miles all on his trike.

So his trike was all decked with a computer, mirrors, flags, lights, rack w/saddlebags, water bottle holder and windjammer.  The windjammer covered the front giving him some protection from the elements of the road which pulled down over the top of his trike.

I was really amazed at what he had been doing but I knew that he was in a hurry to get in as the weather was getting colder and soon it would be dark and he also needed to get checked into his hotel.  But I asked him how comfortable it was to ride and he said it was the best ride.  I mentioned that I was interested in one and he asked me why and I said because I have CTS.  He smiled and said he too had CTS, back problems and some minor knee problems.  I asked how he was able to make such a long ride and he said he was because of the trike.  He pointed out a few things to me and then suggested that I should do some research on the internet but to be careful if I decide to buy one and to buy one that would last me for years because if I really like bicycling and be prepared to drop some money on it.

Boy was he right!  I took a look at some of the trikes and right away I found some but they were almost $1,000 and that was a bit high.  So I did some more research and landed on a couple of manufacturers and then I truly had sticker shock at seeing their price tags for their trikes.  Then there were Delta trikes and Tadpole trikes and so I did some more research into those type of trikes.

Long story short, I determined that I would be more comfortable with a tadpole style trike because the handlebars/steering was down by my side where on the delta trikes I would still need to raise my arms which had become a problem with my CTS.  After less than a week of looking for the type of trike as well as the make of the trikes then I had to find a shop that had these bikes because in my city the only type of dealer of tadpole trikes was a bicycle touring company and they only had two different makes of trikes.  So I had to drive over 90 miles to a nearby city (nearby is all relative) where I came across a recumbent bike shop.

They allowed me to try out several trikes but after one quick spin, my wallet and my heart was set on a particular trike.  So a few hours later I come home hurting in my wallet but happiness was on my face.  I bought my trike.

Just in case you are wondering what I bought, my wallet allowed me to buy a Catrike Pocket tadpole trike.  It was fitted for me since probably no one else will be riding it and then off I went with my trike in the bed of my truck.

So I had lost my way for about 2 1/2 months.  I’m truly hoping the purchase of my new trike will be lots of fun and maybe then I will get back into being active.  You might want to check one of my other bogs, “Recumbent Trike Riding” for some more details about my trike ordeal.

I will be checking in and letting you know if that is helping me be more active.  I will say that I have had  blast riding it and I look forward to the weather giving me a break so I can ride it some more.  So maybe that will help me see the light at the end of the long weight loss tunnel.

Food Listing

Okay so this is mainly for me and will be a listing of foods that I normally eat so that I won’t have to do all sorts of looking up of things, I can just refer to my chart and see how I’m doing concerning carbohydrates.

I know that in order to do a slow loss I need to keep my carb count below 150-100 grams, but I’m really looking for a bit better results.

A sweet spot weight loss is ideally keeping the carb count to 50-100 grams.  Usually this is what I aim for as it allows me quite a bit of wiggle room.

A faster weight loss can be done by keeping the carb count under 50 grams but there is always the threat of Ketosis if I stay on it too much but I doubt if I would stay under 50 for a long period of time.

So where to begin….  Oh right hear by listing things.  I’m going to try and add a chart and see if it is easier for me to use this during my 21 days.  So here goes.

I will be updating this as I add food items to it so you might see this pop up occasionally as items are updated.  This is just so that you can see where I got my counts from and most of it comes from the Internet unless it is posed on the food item.

So just in case you just tuned in, I’ve added a few more things to my food list.  I did take a recipe from the Sonoma diet which is similar to Mediterranean diet.  It should be noted that I do not add any of the walnuts into the salad and am not as generous with the celery because it actually tends to overpower the salad.  So that would theoretically mean that my carb count should be lower but what the heck, I’ll stick with what they list and just go from there.  Too hard for me to try and stop and figure out all of the additives so I’ll just leave it up to them.

I’ve also added Yogurt onto my list and it took some good looking to see what was a wise choice for me.  I love Greek Yogurt but all too often it is high in the calorie count but Danon really surprised me with the Light & Lean Greek Yogurt.  So if you’re inclined to have yogurt even Mark of Mark’s Daily Apple encourages you to have Green yogurt because it has more protein.

I may also be borrowing several other recipes from other diet plans that I’ve tried over the years and if so I will mention where I got the diet so you can look up the recipe.  Most of the books I got it from are several years old and usually you can now find them on line.  

Primal For 21 Days – Day 1

Yep that’s right I’m giving Primal a try again and yes I’m still sick.  I’ve still got a little bit left of my sinus infection which as you know was how I ended up with bronchitis and I guess my sinus problem is last step of the game.  So maybe you’re thinking to yourself as I was doing this morning, ‘Hey, I thought I was going to wait until I was well to start dieting.’

Well you are right, I was going to start maybe by this weekend but then this morning I stepped up on the scale….Wholly Cow!!  I got on the scale and I tipped the scales at 209.7 pounds.  Now I had gone to Atlanta with a weight of 202-203 pounds and came home with only about 1-2 pounds more but because I was sick I ate heavily because I was taking very strong antibiotics and by eating heavily I can avoid having diarrhea and have been eating almost anything and everything I wanted falling back on a poor mantra: ‘I need to eat heavily to avoid diarrhea’ but that came back and bit me and bit me big.

So basically I’ve gained at least 6 pounds in 11 days which is a ridiculous amount of weight to gain.  No wonder my uniform pants were fitting a bit tight and why my waistline was itching, it was rubbing up against my waistband and being squashed and of course I scratched and scarred up my waist.  Hey before you say don’t do that, I didn’t realize that I was scratching myself in my sleep until I got up this morning, I was sore from where I had been scratching so if I don’t stop it will be the ‘Chicken Pox Remedy’ for me.  What is the chicken pox remedy…well when I was young and caught the chicken pox from one of my brothers, I would scratch myself so much that I would make the marks bleed so in order to get me to stop, my mother put socks on my hands and taped them in place so I wouldn’t remove them during the night.  It worked and I did not have any scars from the pox marks.

Enough of going down memory lane.  It is time for me to focus on this.  I had opened my e-mail and saw that Mark of Mark’s Daily Apple had issued the 21 Days of Primal contest.  Unfortunately for me I did not realize that it was suppose to go from September 16 – October 6.  Now I didn’t realize that it had started on the 16th but he said that it was not too late to get started so since I’m not one for competition so I’m not registered for the Challenge.  But as Mark said, it isn’t too late to get started…it is never too late to get started.

I read the email after I had my breakfast which luckily was only a cup of coffee.  I know that I’m not prepared properly to do this but at least I have enough protein in the freezer, hey they were having a sale of sirloin tip steaks at a local market so I took advantage of it and stocked up and I found some great deals on Ahi Tuna so that will be great too.  The hard part was the greens.  I only like certain type of vegetables so that tends to limit me on what I can eat but I’m expecting to do much better this time.

So why just 21 days, well that is a good place to start because after 21 days I should build up a habit of eating better.  Oh so I guess I shouldn’t worry about waiting to start eating better because in this dieting plans I will eat better.  One thing I had noticed was that he encouraged us to eat at least one salad a day and I know that will help along with eating my vegetables, so I will need to start prepping some of my vegetables so that they can be fixed in a way that I enjoy meaning using better and coconut oil for cooking.


So here we go and let’s see how things are going by next Wednesday, I will have been on the diet for 7 days and I’m hoping to see at least 1-2 pounds of weight gone.  Now the only problem I will have is the fact that I need to exercise but I might not be able to do that for the next day or two because I have major sneezing fits every time I go outside, but hopefully with taking my allergy meds along with my Rx nasal spray and things should get better.

Well as you can see by this I really went big for dinner.  I had some left over Sesame Chicken from my dinner last night and I realized that I had been keeping my carb count down, thankfully so I could so ahead and have the chicken and that way it will be gone and I won’t be tempted to have that and rice, which I did not have and disposed of it.  But I was able to have my two crab rangoon left over from dinner last night.  So now all of the temptation food is pretty much gone so tomorrow I will be able to focus much better on my carb count.


Although I was under 100 grams limit I still need to watch much more carefully what I eat.  I also ate way too much and am paying the price for it with an over stretched tummy.

Perhaps you are wondering why I’m taking the Emergen-C vitamins packet, well seeing how poorly I’m feeling I figure it couldn’t hurt me but only help me as I continue to struggle to feel better.  Since I stayed home from work, I was able to rest my throat and it is grateful for the rest and despite the sneezing fit I had earlier I was able to clear my nose and I’m feeling better…oh yeah the 2 hour nap I had earlier also helps.

I’m planning on going to bed in a short time so I can get as much sleep as possible.  I know that is also very vital and maybe I’ll wake up feeling good enough to go for a brief walk.  I’ve got to get some exercise and get adjusted to being outside if this primal plan is going to work.  I’ll worry about exercising more once I feel better, if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s not to go crazy about exercising.

Oh yeah I guess I should tell you that my blood pressure is up and part of it is because of my sinus problem and also because I haven’t been taking my meds correctly but hard to do when it hurts to even swallow.  I was also reading of other ways in which to decrease your blood pressure by focusing on deep breathing and calming times as well as simple walks.  Besides I noticed that my blood pressure was better when I was eating healthier so maybe it will get under control with dieting and regularly exercising.

Thanks for taking the time to read and I hope that this time I see a big difference.  Next month I get a free pass into a local amusement park and my youngest brother is going to join me so I have a riding partner for the rides.  I need to drop a little bit of weight so I don’t squash him when we sit down on the rides.  So I have a simple goal and things should hopefully be better.  No I don’t expect to lose a lot of weight but enough so my pants aren’t tight when we go to the park.
